Chief Illiniwek

Somebody recently mentioned--maybe me!-- how "politically correct" we are now in the world. This is a picture of Chief Illiniwek...the symbol(NOT mascot) for the University of Illinois. There has been much controversy about this character(for 20 years) in the world of political correctness. As of February 27 , 2007, he is no longer allowed to be part of the University of Illinois tradition. To read more about this long standing tradition, go here.
Whether you are a fan or not, Chief Illiniwek was a welcome addition to the football games and basketball games. I am going to an Illini(University of Illinois) football game today and will miss that this does not happen.

  2. Political correctness is probably not at fault but I am guessing the university treasury doesn't have enough to pay out on a monumental law suit. I think like the war in Iraq is about "oil" and oil barons, the
"Chief Illiniwek" fiasco is about money and not wanting to lose it.

There is something to be said for bringing humanity and a people down to a cheerleader level at a football game that is probably not quite right and maybe, like the noose, should not be exploited in education circles. I expect this is why the chief went.

  3. Nice picture Neva! I like the colors but since I'm not a football fan I don't know much about those goings on. I'm just glad that we still have the Atlanta Braves.

  4. I could start on political correctness and parallel situations to this here, but I'll spare you -- the world has gone mad and we argue about things that don't matter -- cheers

  5. What I have never understood is why the Native Americans who were against the Chief couldn't work to find a way to celebrate their heritage. There was great potential to use the Chief as a way to help teach people about their history and what they have stood for. Instead the only exposure most people are going to have to the Indian nations will be their casinos.

  6. I'm on the fence with this one, But I do get annoyed with this P.C. stuff. There's a line in a song by the group 'A Beautiful South', The Worlds turning Disney and there's not much we can do. It always comes to my mind when I see or ear things like this.

  9. I agree with the other comments about PC madness. However, if it were me who were offended I might take a different view ... Like Dot I very glad we still have the Atlanta Braves.
