The Wetland meets the groomed yard

While I personally love the way this looks, those who have an inkling about the environment find this kind of thing appalling.....the "thing" being using the wetlands for a regular yard. I might point out that much of the surrounding area where I live is surrounded by some form of a wetland or preserve......I see both sides of this coin....one, as a homeowner and the other as an environmentalist sympathizer.

Rain? Did someone say rain?

I was driving and this was just after the heavens had opened up. I was surprised because the weather man had just said "no rain today".....ok maybe not where he was but it certainly rained here!

Yarrow and Zinnia's

My yarrow and zinnia's are loving the rain and the sun....too bad I did not consider them for ABC Wednesday's isn't it?

Austrian Pines

These are Austrian Pines in our front yard that seemed to have gone haywire in their growing. I came home and found that my favorite yard guy (husband) had had enough and "trimmed" them.

The back yard looked like a tornado had come through...but no...it was just the electric saw run by hubby!

A Beached Boat

This is one of the more unusual sites I drive by everyday (click to enlarge....it looks very different!). This sail boat has been here for as long as I can remember. In the background is one of our favorite places to go for hamburgers, Brandt's Little Cafe. It used to be an old farmhouse in Inverness...I am not sure if it has always been on this corner or if it was moved here.....but the sail boat....seems lost. It was pouring the rain when I took this and it seemed to fit the mood.

An Industrial Coyote

You might have to enlarge this to see it and I apologize in advance for the bad quality.....but this Industrial park is very near O'Hare airport and as we were driving home, this coyote ran right in front of the car and took off up this side road.....who knew that wildlife was thriving so close to home?

Holy Cow

Harry Carey was a beloved announcer for the Chicago Cubs. He died a few years ago but his restaurants (steak) are still going strong. He was famous for his loud voice, big glasses and always saying "Holy Cow". So, here is a Holy Cow in front of one his restaurants which happens to be near OHare Airport. I thought it was a hoot!-

From country to country....the border crossing

We heard such different stories about the border crossing.....this was on our way into Canada and we had no trouble. Even though there are lots of cars, we really didn't sit for very long going into Canada. Coming home on the weekend of the 4th of July....different story...we sat for 2 hours!

Up close and personal with the falls

Only a few more shots of my trip ....but this is the boat ride known as Maid of the Mist....and with good reason....lots of mist!!! I am only sorry I could not do the falls justice as I was worried about getting my camera wet so I took some very very quick pictures! I hope you can get an idea about the immense scope of these falls.

Croquet anyone?

One of the things we did in Montreal was play Croquet.....and not the croquet we used to play in the backyard! It has its own rules and I quite enjoyed it! One should wear white (if you enlarge this you will see some of us did not wear white!) and bring your own mallet....although they supply you with mallets if you don't happen to own you own! (guess it is like bowling that way!)It was a fun afternoon...

ABC Wednesday Y is for young

It is ABC Wednesday. Please stop over at Mrs. Nesbitt's place to see all the creative choices!
This is my little great niece. She was the flower girl at the wedding we were at in Montreal....I can not tell you how adorable she is! So here is my choice for "Y"---stretching it a bit....."Y" is for YOUNG.

A view of both falls

(A side note....this photo was taken on the top of the walkway down to the boat you see at the bottom....called MAID OF THE MIST-more to come on the ride!) Here is a picture of the horseshoe falls...which is on the Canadian side and the New York Falls that I showed you yesterday. I can not begin to tell you what a stunning vista this is when you are there plus the roar of the falls is amazing. And let me be the first to assure you that those people that thought it was a good idea to go over the falls in a barrel were one french fry short of a happy meal!! Can you see the size of the boulders at the bottom of the falls????? what in the world could they have been thinking?

Niagara Falls, Canada

We are back from a family wedding in Montreal. We stopped on our way to Montreal in Niagara Falls, Canada. My first view of Niagara Falls was at night but my night shots did not turn out all that well and it is SUCH an impressive view I decided to post this one instead. It is an awesome sight and if you are ever in the area, you should really stop in and take a tour. I will show a few photos over the next few days as I sort through all the photos I took. I missed all of you and thank you all for your best wishes! I had no access to a computer while I was gone....we were way to busy. This is actually a picture of the United States falls....the horseshoe falls are on the Canadian side and I will show those tomorrow! Hope you all had a great weekend.

An Odd shot

IN our little neighborhood/village of 6000 homes (or there about) we have some parts that have the electric wires above the ground and in our neighborhood, below the ground. This caught my eye and I really had to get out and look at it....looks like something odd but in reality it is a piece of wood. Interestingly, I could not tell if someone --or the power company---had done this or it was by accident. Just to let you know....it is not there now.....

I am off for a week of vacation in Montreal. I hope you come back next Monday and see some great shots of Niagara Falls as we are stopping there on our way. I hope you all have a great week and enjoy Theme Day of which I will not be able to participate. I will check back in next week.....and I am missing my year anniversary
(of blogging!) on top of it!! See you all next week!
