Not climbing over the gate......

Unless I climb over the gate, this is it for the little cemetery that is hidden down a lane with a cable wire across it.

Inside the Cemetery

This is what it looks like in the cemetery....if you hang over the gate and point and shoot. I wasn't ready to climb the fence.

A different view....

This is the way to the cemetery. On either side of this walkway are the backyards of 2 houses. It is not easy to get to what with the cable wire across the entrance....notice it is just wide enough for a car(hearse) to fit.

An Inverness Cemetery

Posted by Picasa

Ok....my town doesn't have much but we do have a cemetery....and this one happens to be near a subdivision.

This cemetery was established around 1838 on the Cady family farm. It was deeded to Palatine Township in approximately 1856 by the Cady family. It is located behind what was once the Cady farm orchard.
It is privately owned and I am not sure when the first and last person was buried here but somewhere in the mid 1800's. It is accessible if you have a key or want to crawl over the gate or go through the bushes in the back....looks kinda sad now.

A jewelry store

This is the front of the building (a jewelry store) with the glass.....you can almost see the pay phone on the side of the building! It looks like an angled street but it really isn't....that would be me not pointing and shooting straight!

Glass and more glass

This is across the street from this--once you cross the train tracks that is....This just caught my eye with the glass and the guy using the phone.

Lady Neva Day Lily

My neighbor is an avid gardener. Last year, she found on line a day lily named "Lady Neva". She couldn't resist getting it for me(after all..it IS my name!) and here is the result.....and interestingly....it truly only stays in bloom one day....not like my fire engine red day lilies or my Stella Dora's. Go figure that the name actually means a "day"!

Inverness signs

One of the things the village does do is they put up beautiful street signs with the Village Hall (mock castle) on the sign. This intersection has always been confusing because once you cross the street...it is a different street....and why go to all the trouble to make pretty signs when the Stop sign needs a new coat of paint? or maybe a new sign?

An oil change at Northwest Oilers.

This place is not too far from the train station in Palatine. This is my favorite (and only!)oil change shop. I love these guys...they are honest and they do quick work and they don't take advantage of me because I am a "girl"(ok --woman)...but this day, these guys must've been bored because they all jumped up to do my car...usually a 10 minute job....and I was done in less than 5!....They sure know how to make a girl feel special!....but if you are ever in need of an oil change and are in the area....I would highly recommend Northwest Oilers!

Our Rural Fire Department

Posted by Picasa

Because we live in an area without industry, our village has to contract with our closest community(Palatine) for fire services....rural....We have no sewers(septic system), no fire hydrants, and we have wells....So, we have to have pumper trucks available for a fire...Let me be the first to tell you that any house that has ever caught on fire in the village has usually been beyond saving. The truck can only hold 1,000 gallons of water. Not enough to put out a fire.....We hope never to have a fire...unless I want to remodel...;0)!

No Trespassing

This is a wetland on the west side of Inverness (unincorporated.) I was trying to figure out what they don't want you to trespass on.....I thought this was an interesting place for a sign!

Inverness Barn

This barn is actually in unincorporated Inverness on the southern border. There used to be quite a few barns in the area but most of them fell into disuse and then fell down or had to be knocked down....The farmhouse with this barn is now a law office...This one's for Dot!

Palatine Masonic Hall

Posted by Picasa
This building celebrated it's 100th anniversary in 2004. Since 1859, there has been a masonic building in Palatine. The original building was located here until they needed to move to a bigger facility. This is across the street from yesterday's statue.

There is more information on this building here.

Another statue

This is at the very end of the road from where the train station is(the tall building waaayyy at the end). The train tracks are to the left behind the gray electric box. I like this statue.....especially with the newspaper at the feet!...... almost looks real.

"Durty Nellie's"

This bar used to be down near here. when the city decided to revamp, they condemned the building this bar was in (it was very old and very decrepit). Durty Nellie's is a very popular Irish bar with music every weekend...sometimes the line to get in is around the building....this is across the street from the train(again!) and the parking building for the commuters is behind this. They do a booming business.

This little shopping center is across the street from the train station the other way(North). The far building ( behind the bus)is a gym.

Train tracks and townhouses

These are the townhouses across the street from the Palatine train station. This is a maintenance vehicle on the tracks...it was ZOOMING down the tracks....the townhouses were built with commuters to downtown Chicago in mind. Beetle, more red brick for decoration!

An Inverness Park

You'll remember that the town I actually live in is only homes....no industry, schools, churches, nothing...but we do have lovely parks....3 of them. This one is usually busy with a few little ones during the day and soccer games in the afternoon. This day it was 96* Fahrenheit and no one was out but me and my dog!

Mia Cucina

This is the side of the Italian restaurant that is now closed. When this was painted, it was quite unique for this town(15 years ago)...now it is just sad and faded...forlorn, even.

An Italian restaurant-closed

This used to be the most popular restaurant in town...it was an old grocery store that was converted into an Italian restaurant. Eventually, it changed hands...and now it is no longer in business. This is across the street from the Uptown Cafe.

An Angled street

This is the angled street that I tried to get here! Oh well...practice and all that...what is missing in this one?
The umbrellas over the table. A storm..or so they thought!
The train tracks are to the right in this picture. The new condos are at the end of the angled street. The bar is the building with the red roof.Click to enlarge and you will see a biker on the right toward the condos. Beetle, the red brick on the sidewalk is just decoration but I loved your comments!

Children Playing

I am shamelessly stealing this idea from Lori. This is on the way from the coffee house to the train station. The city of Palatine has a few of these types of statues around town. I found this very whimsical.

The back of the bar....

The Lamplighter still looks good from the rear....This is the back of the very cutesy bar. Notice the yellow sign..they are trying to attract the commuters coming home from downtown Chicago. I am a bit of a beer snob, so 2 dollar 24 oz Bud Light won't entice me!

Inverness Silo's

This is our town hall....It was built in 1940. It was used for the Women's Club of Inverness and the Women's Garden Club as well as a few other clubs. It is used today as our village hall and this also happens to be where I go to vote!

Palatine Train Station

This is the closest train station to my town...it was moved from across the street to this new facility when the community decided to do a major face lift. If you hop on the train here...it takes you 45 minutes to get to downtown Chicago....There is also a Starbucks here so if you didn't get your cappacino from the bar turned coffee shoppe you can always get it from Starbucks-although I find Starbucks to be too bitter for me....I LOVE a good cup of coffee, but NOT Starbucks...guess I am in the minority. !
