Grizzly sisters

One of the highlights of my San Francisco trip, was going to the San Francisco Zoo where I met up with fellow blogger AVCR8TEUR and enjoyed a wonderful day taking pictures and getting to know everyone. One of the things I learned (really I had no idea how lacking in knowledge I am ! )was how California got the name the "Golden State". I would have assumed it was from the gold rush of 1849. Not so! They got it from the Grizzly Bears that turn a beautiful gold shade in the weather. As they would come across a field the humans could look out and see a "sea" of gold across the field of the Grizzly's.
These 2 sisters were at the zoo and waiting to be fed. I see now why the Golden is impressive. Imagine a field of 50 bears and you can see why it would be "golden". Amazing, they knew even then that blonde's have more fun.
Have a great day!

  1. I like your photograph today and especially like the part about blondes having more fun.

You might like to travel to Ohio to see me wearing a blog wig. A kind of fun time we had on my granddaughter's birthday.

  2. (Yes, today we can see Oldmanlincoln as blond :-). Be assured Neva, you look much better!)

So now we learnt about the reason for the name "Golden State". I heard that the name California could possibly have its origin from Spanish - caliente fornalia or something like that, but there seem to be other possible explanations.

  7. I remember these blonde gals had lots of fun chasing their lunch around the pool. Nothing like some pre-lunch entertainment.

  11. Did you see the fake bear-prints in the concrete leading away from the windows?

A sea of grizzlies would have been amazing to see, but I'm actually quite glad that I don't have run into them on a hike.

You keep learning more about my state than I do. Here's one for you...did you know what's California's state dance? Or our state rock?
