City Hall

I have a few more pictures I want to share from San Francisco and then back to the dreary Midwest! This is City Hall in San Francisco. While this is a stunning building, I took this because the trees are all sycamores. Now, the sycamores that live in the Midwest look something like this(although this one is in Arkansas, thanks Annie!).....so I was very surprised to see them pruned at the top. A very interesting look. I wonder what they look like in the summer.

  2. I have never seen Sycamores pruned back like this.. I know many are attack by a fungus which is killing them off but its normal to fell those completely.

  3. I native California sycamores I see look like the photo from the Midwest version. These trees look like they've been given a crew cut.

If you haven't figured it out yet, the California state rock is serpentinite since it's unusually abundant here. Our state dance is West Coast Swing, one of my favorite dances :)

  4. Hi Neva,
great shots from SFO. Loved to see the Twin Peaks drive, the Ocean and the Grizzli! Amazing that story of the Golden State... ;))
Thanks for your comments at Blogtrotter, where I finished my Greek Islands 2006 adventure with a post on Cretan Towns! Since it's Easter time, also made a post with some lousy pictures on Easter in Prague (1997) at Revival 90s.
Enjoy your Easter Eggs and have a great long weekend!

  5. I just noticed outside my office building that we have two trees that are similarly trimmed, and judging by the bark it looks like sycamore! I can't tell yet, it's barely growing back its leaves so they're too young for me to ID it for sure.

  7. I like your photos of San Francisco and this is another good one. When a tree is cut like this it has been "crowned" (I think!)

    To answer your questions,
Manchester is about 150 miles from Cheltenham and took us 2 and a half hours to get there on the train :)

  9. Great shot.

The midwest was only dreary when you were out west!

  10. I must say, they don't look majestic at all in this photo, Neva.

Thanks for linking to my big ole tree.

  11. You know, I don't remember what the trees look like during the summer. I'm going to have to look closer next time. I wished you had a chance to go inside City Hall.
