Alcatraz Island

This is the view of the island you can see as you approach Alcatraz via the Alcatraz Cruise Line. All I really knew about Alcatraz was from the movie Escape from Alcatraz with Clint Eastwood. I would highly recommend you read this to learn more. One of the things I never knew was there was a small population of families of the guards that also lived on the island. The children went to school via the ferry and it was a much sought after place to live with a waiting list since it was so inexpensive. The things you learn....

  4. A few years ago my son who is a photographer went there and took a lot of photos. He was disappointed as the place was a mess of rusty iron and peeling paint. Is it still like that?

  7. Jim stole my joke! Great photo. I like the Nicolas Cage film The Rock set on Alcatraz. All that sun, blue sky and no snow must have been a nice change for you!

  9. Nice shot from the ferry. I hope you were able to see most of the island since you had a limited amount of time before your flight. I look forward to seeing more photos from your SF tours. You've probably got a tons of photos to sort through.

  10. Its a cold and isolated place to live but a fascinating history. The tour reall is the best. I have to go back every few years to see and hear it again.

  11. Hi Neva! This is Alex, I meet you at the zoo with John's group.

That is cool, how close did you guys get to the island? Leave it up to a visitor to get closer to Alcatraz than I've ever have.

I'm completely re-making my online presence, so my new blog is heavily under construction at the moment: http://blindingobvious.wordpress.com/

    Take care.

  12. When you see the conditions in Alcatraz it should have been enough to make the criminals stop -I guess they don't think like normal people.

  14. If you are into young adult literature at all, there is a neat novle published a couple of years ago and nominated for several awards: Al Capone Does My Shirts by Genny Cholenko. It followes the life of a family living on the island in the 30s.
