ABC Wednesday I is for Illinois

I bet you thought I would do Inverness!
I live in the state of Illinois and this was taken at a University of Illinois football game last fall. (The Fighting Illini is what the University is called in the college world!)On Dec. 3, 1818, Illinois became the 21st of 50 states. The nickname is The Prairie State, the motto is 'State sovereignty, National union', the origin of the name of Illinois came from Algonquin for "tribe of superior men".
Make sure you try and visit all the ABC participants over at Mrs. Nesbitts place!
Have a great day.

Also, just an FYI or my pet peeve...Illinois is pronounced the French way ....without an "s"... ill-a-noy.

  3. I deleted my first comment because I forgot to check for typos. . .

Great thinking! I would have liked to post something from Idaho but scanner is down and I haven't been to Idaho since I got my digital camera.

  4. Naturally you'd do Illinois - so would I if I lived there. I've heard so much about the mid-West that I must get there some day. :D

  8. That is nice you were able to use Illinois. And the football game is really clever. Your narrative is interesting too.

  12. Don't know what I expected but you "do" Inverness all the the time so I would certainly expect something slightly different.

  17. Great "I" post. I enjoyed the state facts as well. We are starting our Texas unit and the kiddos will be learning that kind of thing.

  23. Great post for I, and we have the same problem when people say Oregon. I love the different ways they say it.

  24. I love football, it is the only sport I watch. I got a chance to go to a game at the University of TN. when Heath Schuler (sorry I know what is spelled wrong) was still playing there. It is always fun to watch a game in person.

  25. that's what I call a game, lots of people, color, music,..., excellent.

  26. Good post. You will be happy to know that I have always pronounced your state the right way. :-)

  27. One of our local sports radio stations also calls them the Fighting Zookers in honor of Ron Zook who some of the hosts got to be friends with while he was at the U. of Florida. I was happy to see Ill-in-noy knock of Ohio State last year. :)

  28. Great photographs here! And I have the same peeve about the pronunciation.

And let's not forget the people who pronounce Missouri like Missourah.

Thanks for stopping by my site and for leaving a comment!

  29. Love you post, I like Illinois, too. I'm a California Girl, but they taught us the correct pronounciation. The only people I recall mispronouncing were midwesterners, strange.

  30. Thanks for the imformation about your home state. I like facts! Lively photo too :)

  31. Oh, I thought the motto of Ill-in-oy was "Land of Lincoln." I definitely would have gotten that wrong on a trivia quiz. LOL

  32. How could I not think of Illinois when I live here. Oh well, good job to you for thinking of it :)

  33. Excellent post, and "I"nformative, too.

  34. They are some big flags there!

I'm always amazed at the huge crowd that get along to college sports in the US.

  35. Perfect I post. How nice to have 2 I's to use. I like the game picture too.

  37. I thought it was pronounced ill-i-noise! Just kidding. That team did pretty good last year, if I remember correctly. Great choice for an I.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I was born and raised in IL. When people mispronounced it we would say, there's no "noise" in Illinois!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Wow, that is a packed stadium. Looks like you had pretty good seats, but close to the end zone. As a kid, I thought it was pronounced "Illi-noise".

As for the ibis bird, I took a picture of the sign. There's no way I would remember it. :D

  40. But just think, if Illinois was pronounced in the irritating way, you could say there were a bunch of Illinoisy people at that ballgame.

  41. You fooled me Neva :)

Great to see you're keeping us on our toes...
