A lightning rod
This is an antique lightning rod. The ball in the middle would explode if struck by lighting. It is also a weather vane....two for the price of one! This is obviously just used as decoration here but I will show you some on a roof soon!
Hi Neva.. now this I do like... it really is a beauty. I see so many of these and weather vanes while out and about.. maybe it's time I started to collect there pictures.
Great post it as aroused my interest and given me ideas... so thank you.
When my wife and I grew up, in Texas, lighting rods were a common site. However, I don't think I remember seeing on since moving to the east coast ... We lived in Atlanta for a while and on a walk to the top of Stone Mountain we saw lots evidence of lighting strikes. So the need exists in the South East. Maybe modern constuction has lighting rods built into.
I wish I had one of these. My house was struck by lightening a few years ago. Totally destroyed the security system. Even causing a big explosion in the junction box where all the wires from the sensors came together. Happily, that was all the damage.

ReplyDeleteNot sure I like the idea of the ball exploding! Interesting post.
ReplyDeleteNever seen anything like it - two for one indeed!
ReplyDeletedon't worry about not knowing where Dubai is. As you've found out, it comes under the Middle East.
ReplyDeleteHope you've looked at all my photos. May more to follow.
