ABC Wednesday E is for Elk.....

Elk Grove Village, a town not far from Inverness and where we used to live. This is a public, old cemetery that needs some serious attention. It is right next to the I-90/Kennedy expressway and very near the on/off ramp. There is an electric box very near the front of it and is difficult to find. My choice for E....and yes, Elk Grove used to have Elk. They are in the forest preserve right down the street and there is a fence around that part of the forest preserve to keep them safe...but I could not find them with my camera!
Enjoy more ABC's here, hosted by Denise, the fourth round.

  1. This is sad, isn't it? I suppose unless you have some volunteers willing to clean it up, most cemeteries no longer in use just fall into disrepair.

If I'd had time and little more creativity, I could have chosen elk, too, now that you've mentioned it. A neighbor down the road raises elk, though I've never understood why:)

  2. You've got a great photo and story for your E, Neva. And I really like those photos of the deer, especially the one in the side-view mirror.

  3. This cemetery definitely needs some attention. Good photo to show the state of its disrepair.

  4. avec les tombes dans tous les sens, cela fait cimetière d'une ville fantôme.

with the tombs in all directions, this cemetery is a ghost town

  5. The OC in me wants to straighten out those tombstones!

    Love the huge trees though!

  6. In Finland, you way find elks on the roads and motorways around Helsinki.
And it's very dangerous for both driver and elk.

  7. No elks here on this island. Interesting E choice and so personal to your area.

  8. Maybe it is the elks that have done this damage - they are big enough to manage it.

BTW I have heard of "Elephant's graveyard", but never of "Elk's cemetery" :-)

  9. My dad used to love to stop at old cemeteries and try to find the oldest tombstone there. It scared me a little when I was a kid, but now I like to wonder about the history of the people (although I don't really make it a point to stop at old cemeteries :)).

  11. I love old graveyards just like this one. Somehow, to have every grave neatly lined up and flowered gives me the creeps, whereas this to me is just lovely. Reminds me of old English graveyards, they have a wonderful, timeless but still respectful atmosphere. Gosh, you're going to think I'm a weirdo now! ;-)

  13. Great photo! I wish now I'd gone to Elk Grove Village; maybe next time. Oh, and the deer photos from Sunday are amazing.
    Nice work; thanks for sharing!

  15. It's known that elk are a bit shy! They don't like photographers! :-)

  18. I've seen cemeteries covered with weeds, but never with headstones keeling over like that. Very odd and sad.

  19. There are a number of old cemeteries with the same problem here.

  20. How interesting that you have elk there. Out here in Colorado I only ever see them up in the mountains, so I just assumed that was their habitat.

It always makes me a little sad to see a cemetery that's not kept up better, but I still always think there's something beautiful and peaceful about them.
